abstract

conclusions the overall results indicated that bacteriophages isolated from sewage exhibited excellent lytic activity against mrsa strains. in conclusion, bacteriophages can be further characterized and appear to be a promising candidate for phage therapy against mrsa in the future. results the phages exhibited good lytic activity against mrsa when tested in-vitro, and the highest activity was attained within three to six hours of phage infection. the isolated phage pq/48 was also found efficient in decreasing the bacterial count during an in-vivo trial in rabbits. a protein analysis using sds-page revealed 10 proteins of between 20 kda and 155 kda in size. methods bacterial isolates were first collected and identified from pus samples taken from the surgical and burn units using standard microbiological procedures. a cefoxitin disk screen test was then used and interpreted according to the clinical laboratory standards institute (clsi) guidelines for the detection of mrsa. the sewage samples were processed and the phages enriched using s. aureus as a host organism. turbid and clear plaques of different sizes were isolated using an overlay method, purified, and then enumerated by means of a dilution method. background in recent years, antibiotic resistance has been indicated as a paramount threat to public health. the use of bacteriophages appears to be a safer alternative for the control of bacterial infections. objectives the present study aims to explore sewage water for the presence of indigenous bacteriophages, and to investigate their antibacterial potential against methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (mrsa).

Isolation, Characterization, and Antibacterial Activity of Bacteriophages Against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Pakistan

BACKGROUND In recent years, antibiotic resistance has been indicated as a paramount threat to public health. The use of bacteriophages appears to be a safer alternative for the control of bacterial infections. OBJECTIVES The present study aims to explore sewage water for the presence of indigenous bacteriophages, and to investigate their antibacterial potential against Methicillin-resistant S...

Antibacterial Activity of Rhus javanica against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

In the present study, the leaves of Rhus javanica (R. javanica) were extracted with ethanol, and we investigated the antimicrobial activity of the ethanol extract of R. javanica against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Control groups were treated with media containing 0.1% DMSO. The ethanol extract of R. javanica inhibited the growth of MRSA at concentrations ranging from 0.0...

Antibacterial Activity of THAM Trisphenylguanide against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

This study investigated the potential antibacterial activity of three series of compounds synthesized from 12 linear and branched polyamines with 2-8 amino groups, which were substituted to produce the corresponding guanides, biguanides, or phenylguanides, against Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Antibacterial ac...

Antibacterial activity of epigallocatechin gallate against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

The antibacterial activity of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), a catechin, against 53 clinical isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was evaluated and expressed as minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). The MIC50 and MIC90 of the strains were found be 64 and 126 micrograms/ml, respectively by the microdilution method. A time-kill study using an isolate showed that EGCg...

Hypericin Extracts Antibacterial Effect of Cultivated Hypericum perforatum Against Staphylococcus aureus Susceptible and Methicillin-Resistant

Staphylococcus aureus are important factors for infections that acquired of hospital and community. Infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus mainly of hospital origin, which in many countries is increasing. For this reason, many researchers have tried to find new compounds as a substitute for these antibiotics. Hypericin is the active substance H.perforatum and licone ma...

In-vitro and In-vivo Evaluation of Silymarin Nanoliposomes against Isolated Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen and remains a common cause of burn wound infections. Different studies have shown that entrapment of plant-derived compounds into liposomes could increase their anti-Staphylococcus aureus activity. Silymarin is the bioactive extract from the known plant Silybum marianum L. The objective of this study was to evaluate efficacy of silymarin in fre...
